Game-Day Eats: Best Places to Eat in Downtown Athens Near Campus

Game day in Athens runs on food. Whether you need biscuits before an early kick, a sit-down lunch before you walk to Sanford, or a late-night slice after a win, downtown Athens has you covered, most of it a short walk from campus. Here are our picks, sorted by when you need them. Every spot here is one we checked as open on its own site or a recent listing, but hours change on game weekends, so check before you go.

Golden rule: on home game days, every good spot near campus gets slammed. Eat early, eat late, or book ahead.

Before You Go: Game-Day Food Tips

  • Go early. Breakfast and brunch lines grow fast on Saturdays, and first-come spots do not take reservations.
  • Book where you can. Sit-down places like The National recommend reservations on weekends.
  • Park once, then walk. Downtown sits right beside the UGA campus. Use the College Avenue or West Washington Street parking decks and stay on foot. See our parking tips.
  • Have a plan B. Pick a second spot nearby in case the wait is long.
  • Check hours that day. Some places change hours for home games or close on Sundays.

Breakfast and Brunch

A big breakfast is the best way to start a long Saturday of tailgating and cheering.

  • Mama’s Boy (197 Oak St): Southern breakfast, open daily from 7 AM to 2:30 PM. It is first-come, first-served with no reservations, so get there early.
  • Big City Bread Cafe (393 N Finley St): house-made bread and pastries, quiche and a big patio that is popular with families.
  • Last Resort Grill (174/184 W Clayton St): Saturday and Sunday brunch from 11 AM to 2 PM right downtown, and Flagpole readers’ 2026 pick for dessert.
  • Five & Ten (1073 S Milledge Ave): Sunday brunch from 11 AM in Five Points, a nice way to wind down a big weekend.

Coffee to Get You Going

  • Jittery Joe’s (297 E Broad St): Athens’ own locally roasted coffee, downtown.
  • Walker’s Coffee & Pub (128 College Ave): coffee by morning and a pub by night, so it works before and after the game.
  • Hendershot’s (237 Prince Ave): a coffee shop by day and bar by night on Prince Avenue.

Lunch and Dinner Downtown

These are the places to fuel up for the walk to Sanford or to celebrate after.

  • The National (232 W Hancock Ave): a downtown favorite for lunch and dinner. Reservations are recommended on weekends.
  • Dawg Gone Good BBQ (224 W Hancock Ave): counter-service downtown barbecue with ribs, pulled pork and sides. Its site lists closing at 8 PM on Fridays and Saturdays, so go early.
  • Ted’s Most Best (254 W Washington St): thin-crust pizza and a patio downtown.
  • Georgia Theatre Rooftop (215 N Lumpkin St): a rooftop bar and restaurant above the famous music venue.

Worth the Short Drive

Just outside the downtown grid, these are worth it if you have a car or a free morning.

  • Hot or Not Chicken Co. (1016 E Broad St): Nashville-style hot chicken in the famous former Weaver D’s building. Closed Sundays.
  • Automatic Pizza (1397 Prince Ave): New York-style slices, and the 2026 Flagpole readers’ pick for local pizza.
  • Akademia Brewing (150 Crane Dr): a full-service brewpub with 20+ house beers on tap and a full food menu.

Late-Night Bites

After a night game or a long night downtown, you will want something warm.

  • Little Italy (125 N Lumpkin St): a decades-old downtown pizza spot and the late-night crowd’s go-to.
  • Walker’s Coffee & Pub (128 College Ave): a coffee shop by day and a bar by night, right across from the Arch.

Something Sweet

  • Condor Chocolates (160 E Washington St downtown and 1658 S Lumpkin St in Five Points): Ecuadorian chocolates and truffles, plus coffee, milkshakes and gelato.
  • Last Resort Grill: grab a slice of cake to go.

A Sample Game-Day Food Plan

Here is one easy way to eat your way through a home game. Adjust it to the kickoff time, which is posted on georgiadogs.com.

Noon Kickoff

  • Grab coffee and a pastry early, or breakfast at Mama’s Boy as soon as it opens.
  • Snack at the tailgate. See our Athens tailgating guide.
  • Celebrate with an early dinner downtown, booked ahead.

Afternoon Kickoff

  • Brunch downtown.
  • Head to the tailgate for the afternoon.
  • Late dinner or a slice after the game.

Night Kickoff

  • Sleep in, then lunch downtown.
  • Tailgate through the afternoon.
  • Late-night pizza or barbecue to finish the day.

Not sure where to start? Pick by mood. Want a slow Southern breakfast? Mama’s Boy. Need something fast before the walk to the stadium? Grab a slice or barbecue downtown (Dawg Gone Good closes by 8 PM on weekends). Celebrating a big win with the whole crew? Book The National early in the week. Out late after a night game? Little Italy and Automatic Pizza are your friends. And if you only have time for one treat, make it chocolate from Condor.

One more: Hot or Not Chicken Co. took over the famous Weaver D’s building at 1016 E Broad St after Weaver D’s served its last plate in early 2026. Its site lists Monday to Saturday, 11 AM to 9 PM, closed Sunday, so it works for a game-day lunch or dinner. Pick hot or not at the counter.

Eating With Kids

Big City Bread Cafe calls itself family-friendly and has a big patio, an easy win with kids. Keep snacks and water in your bag, because lines and walking add up on game day. If you want to watch an away game with the family, see the family-friendly spots on our watch parties page.

Dietary Needs

For special diets, check the menu online or call before you go. Game-day kitchens are busy, so ask about allergies when you order, not after.

Why Downtown Is the Place to Eat

Downtown Athens is the rare college town where the food, the bars, the music and the campus all sit in a few walkable blocks. You can eat breakfast on Clayton Street, walk through the Arch to North Campus and be in the stadium crowd without moving the car. That is the Classic City at its best: urban, walkable and red and black all over.
