Athens Tailgating Guide: Parking, Best Spots, Rules and Checklist
Tailgating in Athens is a Saturday ritual: tents under the oaks, coolers in the shade and a sea of red and black around Sanford Stadium. This guide covers where to park, the best tailgate areas around Sanford, the rules you need to know, a packing checklist and a game-day timeline. Rules come from UGA and Visit Athens, and they can change, so always check georgiadogs.com and UGA Transportation and Parking before game day.
The big two: no tailgate setups on campus before 7 AM Saturday, and on North Campus no setups until 5 hours before kickoff.
Parking on Game Day
Parking is the first thing to figure out. Spots near Sanford go fast, and most campus decks and lots need a game-day pass.
Campus Parking Passes
UGA Transportation and Parking Services sells a limited number of season parking passes through ParkMobile, first-come, first-served. For 2026, it lists the Carlton Street Deck, East Campus Deck, the Health/Visitors Center and River Road at $40 per game ($280 per season), and RV parking at the E23 Park and Ride at $150 per game. Passes are limited to one per ParkMobile account and are not renewable from year to year.
Stadium Loop Shuttle
UGA runs the free S (Stadium Loop) bus from the East Campus Deck to Gate 6 at Sanford Stadium, starting 3.5 hours before kickoff. After the game it runs back from Gate 6 for at least an hour, until traffic clears. If the Intramural Fields overflow lot is opened, the shuttle serves it too. All Stadium Loop buses are accessible for fans with disabilities.
Downtown Decks
No campus pass? Downtown Athens has public decks, including the College Avenue and West Washington Street decks, a walk from campus. Expect game-day traffic and road closures near campus, so arrive early. See the official downtown parking map.
Park in a marked space only. Tents, grills and chairs cannot take up a parking space.
Best Tailgate Areas Around Sanford
North Campus
North Campus is the classic Athens tailgate: shady quads, old buildings and the Arch right by downtown. It is also the most regulated area, with a later setup time and a list of banned items (see the rules below). If you want the old-school, picnic-style tailgate with no grill, this is it, and it is an easy walk to Sanford.
Around the Stadium and Central Campus
Open campus areas around Sanford fill with tents from 7 AM. Tailgating is allowed on open campus spaces, but walkways and sidewalks must stay clear, so set up on the grass, not on the path.
East Campus
The East Campus Deck is a smart base because the Stadium Loop shuttle leaves from there. Tailgate near your car, then ride to Gate 6.
Bulldogs Tailgate Club
Want a tent set up for you? The Bulldogs Tailgate Club sells season and single-game packages in designated campus areas, with set-up tents, catering, TVs, seating and parking, according to Visit Athens. Book through the official club site.
Tailgating Rules
These are the main rules from UGA and Visit Athens. Check the official pages before every season, because they can change.

Inside Sanford
Per UGA’s 2026 A-Z Guide for Sanford Stadium: bags must be clear and no larger than 12 x 12 x 6 inches, and backpacks, coolers, strollers and umbrellas are not allowed. There is no re-entry.
